Jianzi!

History of Jianzi (Shuttlecock)
The first known version of Jianzi was in China in the 5th century BC. It is said to have come from Cuju which is a ball game like football which was used in military training. Jianzi spread through Asia and had quite a lot of different names. The game has been around for over two thousand years!
Celebrating Our Student's Bilingual Victory

This competition were reported on media such as China Daily and FT Chinese.
Joshua O’Neill won 1st prize in the 15-18 years old age group at the second UK English-Chinese bilingual recital competition with an awards presentation in SOAS, London on 19th November, 2023.

During the event, Joshua performed one poem in Chinese and one story wrote by himself in English.
From over 130 entrants from all over England, there were 34 who made it through to the final competition.
The competition had a star-studded judging panel, including:
Julia Lovell FBA is a British scholar and prize-winning translator of modern Chinese literature and history. Frances Wood is a former curator of the Chinese collections in the British Library, a Sinologue and a historian known for her writings on Chinese history, including the acclaimed The First Emperor of China; Beth McKillop is an author, a senior research fellow and former deputy director at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Hilary Spurling CBE FRSL is a British writer and biographer best known for her award-winning biography of Henri Matisse.
This is absolutely fantastic and well deserved for Joshua – a huge well done to him! He spoke brilliantly throughout the competition!
With this good experience, we hope to see more MM students participating in 2024.
